This course meets MLO3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge
The course Cultures and Civilizations of Spain was a very crucial course to take in terms of my career as a student obtaining the Bachelors in Spanish Language and Cultures. It was important to know the history of Spain in its artistic aspect as well as the historical context because it has a connection with the way Spanish is spoken today. It also has an influence on how the culture has formed to be very diverse depending on the country. In this course, we looked at Spain by the years beginning with the earliest century and ending with 21st century Spain. In looking at each century, we would pay attention to details and styles in both art and literature which was interesting because as the centuries passed, we saw a change in styles drastically and it did have a lot to do with specific historical events. These events influenced the way that artists and writers both chose their main subject in their pieces and it was an extremely educational opportunity to see them reflected in their work. The course consisted of reading about Spain in the century we were discussing that particular week and entering in the classroom to discuss as a group what aspects stood out to us. Group discussions were also a regular part of the class and allowed students to share their perspectives on the influences of Spain that were reflected through the art and literature. For the final project, we were required to make and present an oral presentation about a century that we chose. In that presentation we had to choose which aspects represented it the most and make it stand out from the other centuries. The last written paper we had to write was about the same century that we presented on but go more into detail about the century. Down below is my final paper on 17th century Spain.
