MLO 2: Linguistics
Students develop their knowledge of fundamental concepts in the fields of Hispanic and Applied Linguistics, and are able to apply them in the completion of research papers and data-driven small-scale research studies pertaining current issues in these areas.
Lingüística MLO 2
Los estudiantes desarrollan su conocimiento de conceptos fundamentales en los campos de la Lingüística Hispánica y Aplicada, y pueden aplicarlos en la finalización de trabajos de investigación y estudios de investigación a pequeña escala basados en datos relacionados con temas actuales en estas áreas.
Courses
SPA303, LING392
The second MLO requires students to understand the linguistic aspects of the language they are studying. However, this does not exclude other linguistic-related courses that pertain to linguistics in general. My concentration is Hispanic Language and Culture, but I did not pass up on the opportunity to enroll in LING392. This course was not specific to my studies but nonetheless helped me form a better understanding of how we as speakers have acquired the language. Details that were crucial to understand in this course were about language acquisition and the general meaning of language which are both important points that I was weaker at understanding before this course. Our final assignment consisted of a study of someone whose first language was not English. With this assignment, which I have not yet completed, I hope to learn more about universal language and how people develop their own way of speaking based on the language they hear around them. The second course I chose to take was SPA314. This gave me a better understanding of the value of linguistics and the different ways that Spanish speakers can improve in their own speaking skills. Not only did this course require readings filled with information about linguistics, but it also consisted of applying what I have learned and backing it up with my own research and turning in written essays about those discoveries and understandings. Syntax was one skill not necessarily focused in this course, which was why I chose to take SPA 303. I was able to apply my understanding of why Spanish speakers use our language the way we do, but also the way we learn to become better speakers in a classroom. Overall, it improved my communication skills and I hope to improve more in the Spring of 2022 semester when I take the course LING392.
