My service learning experience was completed at The Center for Diagnosis and Instruction (CRDI) which is a program associated with the California State University at Monterey Bay.
CSUMB students are required to complete a set of thirty hours in order to obtain a degree in Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture in the course SPAN301S. In this course, also recognized as Service Learning in the Latino Community, the most important message is to understand the effects of social justice through your own participation in certain services. This allows the students to make connections with their community as long as they pertain to one of the three counties which include Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz. Given that my goal is to become an instructor of Spanish, I figured that looking for an organization to complete these hours would have to cater to that. I wanted to make sure that I was participating in something that would give me unique experiences to the teaching community.
Luckily, I stumbled upon the CRDI which is partnered with CSUMB and works as an intervention program that focuses on the progress of reading for struggling students of grades K-8. I live in Monterey County and I am aware of the diverse community that I identify myself with. With this I am also aware that with diversity comes a coexistence of difficult educational situations for students pertaining to that diversity, an example of course would be the Hispanic community. I wanted nothing more than to be able to offer my own experiences to make special connections within a program that was so close to my own home. I was fortunate enough to have found myself working with certified instructors that also wanted to assist in their community and I gained a clearer understanding of the impact that I as a tutor was making in the lives of the students. Ultimately I could say that I appreciate the CRDI and CSUMB for their great opportunities to learn about the community you live in and how you can play an important role in the way it evolves into a better community.
Below I have a link to the webpage for the CRDI.
