Courses:
SPA301, SPA304
In completing the MLO 1 requirement through the courses listed above, I acquired a better fluidity in all aspects of bilingual communication. These include speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Courses I took before transferring to CSUMB also consisted of practicing my listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. However, these two courses consisted of a more focused type of practice of each skill. In my course of SPA301, Spanish Composition and Oral Practice, I learned how to develop and organize my own opinions and perspectives on social topics pertaining to modern day issues. After attending this course, I am now able to write argumentatively in Spanish and also organize my main points in a way that will help grasp my audience’s attention about said topic. Additionally, I am able to present these arguments and viewpoints orally for immediate feedback and response. This allowed me to practice my language skills argumentatively, which was a skill that was not as strong as when I first started taking that course in the semester. The oral presentations were useful for this practice while other assignments consisted of writing essays on the topic I would present. This gave me an overall connection to the importance of practicing the Spanish language. In the SPA304 Intro to Hispanic Literature, assignments also consisted of oral and written work. One contrasting factor between these courses was that I was able to further my knowledge in a more literary sense. There were different types of literary genres along with their own set of authors, styles, and time periods that they pertained to. Overall, in the completion of this first MLO I have gained a more fluent Spanish speaking ability now that I was able to practice my argumentative Spanish as well as my literary Spanish. Both are able to contribute to my language proficiency as they have their distinct vocabulary.
