Courses:
SPA310, SPA316, SPA330
The third MLO is centered around the enrichment of one's knowledge in history and culture for the language studied. With this, the courses I have completed to satisfy this learning outcome gave me a better knowledge of the history and culture of Spanish. When I decided to carry on with this major, I knew that eventually I would have to learn about other Spanish speaking countries. They included Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela and Cuba. In learning about history, culture, and linguistics of Spanish, I have understood the importance of the history of Spain as well. It was crucial for me to understand that its history does connect with how we see the world now in terms of Spanish speakers. More specifically, the course SPA316 was about the history of Spain and it ultimately gave me a new perspective of the language I know as Spanish and how it has evolved into what it is now. Secondly, the course SPA330 consisted of a deeper insight to the variety of the Spanish language that exists in Spanish-speaking countries as well as the United States. Lastly, the course SPA310 has become one of my favorite courses in my time at the university. It allowed me to open my eyes about the effects that Chicanx writers have for their audience, especially young ones. The class consisted of reading various books ranging from ones that cater to children all the way to young adults. I appreciate the historical backgrounds that were emphasized in the books to prove the point that the Spanish language and culture is different for everyone and everyone will have different experiences as well as reactions to what they're going through. The value of history and culture for these courses was interesting and insightful while also filling my requirement for the MLO of literary and cultural knowledge.
