CSUMB is located near a community rich in Hispanic culture. For my studies I was required to complete a set of hours throughout a semester at a location that practices authentic Hispanic culture. Therefore, I completed said hours at The Center for Reading Diagnostics and Instruction. This program assisted children grades K-8 where the curriculum was used to tutor children struggling with reading as well as writing. Given the community being rich in culture, the center assisted in the maintenance of reading education with many cultural resources that helped students engage and make connections during their sessions. I was able to become an interventionist for my specific student where I was able to independently create and use my own set of resources that fit my students' needs on a weekly basis. I was also able to collect data to improve my own teaching for the curriculum that assisted in making better choices for the community by integrating my own perspective on cultural resources. While completing these hours, the course for service learning consisted of classroom discussions and oral presentations on Spanish that provided a space for students to give their own reflections as fellow classmates gave feedback to those experiences and made connections. Both the classroom and service learning experience were an eye-opening experience that allowed me to join my community in an effort to make it better. I was able to implicate my own experiences as a fellow Spanish speaker and help young students of my community feel comfortable for having some of the same experiences. I was exposed to a variety of different ways that language was developing in the minds of young students and how they identified themselves in a world where the Spanish language is evolving. I now have an understanding of teaching and instruction as a career path, which is a career path I have chosen to take after graduation. This experience will stay with me throughout my career as a teacher and will help me transition into my own classroom because of the unique experience.
