Description:
An analysis of historical and modern Japanese society through works of art and media including photography, film, maps, and other visual materials. Students learn to extract information from images as part of a visual analysis, while dealing with socio-geographical methods for understanding urban flows, economic disparities, transportation, and built environments. Students compare what they understand about Japanese culture with their own familiar environments. Taught in English.
Meets MLO 4: Secondary Culture Other than Hispanic Cultures
MLO 4 consists of a focus on a secondary culture other than the one studying. This MLO was fulfilled by the completion of JAP 314: Japan Visual Culture and Media. This course was completed in my first semester which was in Fall 2020. The professor for this course was Dr. Pham. I highly appreciate this class for introducing me to the different styles of art in Japan. Most importantly, the media and comparisons between westernized Japan media and traditional Japan media was a focus that interested me the most in the entire course for its honest overview of how the United States changes the original work to appropriate it into their mainstream culture. Work consisted of weekly reports on the different time periods of Japan and their associations as well as impact on Japanese culture. Essentially, these pieces of art that were not made in more modern times have still impacted the nature of Japanese art today. Our final project was to take no more than four types of Japanese media, whether it be film, images, television commercials, ect. Our task was to analyze them for the time period that they were made, their compositions, and their importance to the representation of Japanese culture. Along with this written essay, we had to do a visual presentation. I chose to do a mix of different media as well as images from different periods in Japan as a use for comparison in those styles. Down below you will see links to each one of my media analysis sections to my final paper as well as a YouTube link to me presenting the visuals.
